I really enjoyed this piece. I didn’t come to Substack through music, but as someone who deeply appreciates it, I love seeing how you’re keeping pieces of the Dead culture and those years alive through your stories and photos. There’s something special about the way music communities carry their history forward. Thanks for sharing it here.

I appreciate your comment, especially about our carrying our history forward. Part of it is to set the record straight for those of us who were actually there, and part of it is to introduce folks to the music through another avenue than the music itself.

I signed up for your newsletter based on our mutual love for the Grateful Dead, but am drawn to your nature photos! It is a great reminder to stop and smell the flowers, watch the birds and bees and appreciate how beautiful the landscape is!

I appreciate reading your observations and experiences--GD and otherwise. Thanks, and a big hug.

I thought it was so cool to learn that you lived and worked at the Grand Canyon and I love those pictures you posted from there. I am glad that you go "off script".

I love how multifaceted you are, Rosie. I think this new platform is exciting. I adore seeing all aspects of your life experience. I think it best none of us be pigeonholed as life is too grand of an experience to be narrowed like that. Your photos are all gorgeous and your candid thoughts are refreshing and help your followers get a very real sense of your authenticity. Bravo and congrats!

Thanks, Emily. Your very specific encouragement is much appreciated.

Thank you. The Golden Gate Bridge is worth seeing in person, perhaps even walking across when you finally get there.

Thanks for everything you post! Obviously, I love the work and materials you share from the 60s and on with the GD, but one of the attractive things to me about that scene when I got into it in the mid 70s was the fact that people brought so much of their own lives and passions to it and it wasn’t as insular as it became in later years, so I really love exploring everything you have done since. And I love seeing photographs of all kinds of things. My own work is very much informed by every day things being seen in a different light, from bugs to patterns of shadows and clouds, etc.

Thank you. That's very encouraging.

Speaking as a real, live human, I appreciate your writings and photos of the GD and beyond and am glad you have ventured into the substack realm. Keep on Truckin'!

Looking at the mules, I did have a pang of regret that I never got to visit you at the Grand Canyon and ride one of them!

Rosie McGee's avatar

Not for the faint of heart, and after I left there, they eliminated a large segment of the rides. I think you now have to book a year or two in advance!

I love your pics Ms Rosie and they have a wonderfully calming effect when I look at them. Thank you for the peace.

I appreciate that. Taking photos has always been a peaceful refuge for me.
